Indigo Shading Ltd secure Leeds University Campus contract

Indigo Shading Ltd was awarded a contract to supply and install commercial parasols across multiple locations at Leeds University, supporting the creation of comfortable, sheltered outdoor spaces for students and staff.

Following a competitive tender process, the University selected Indigo Shading to deliver durable, high performance shading solutions designed for long term use in busy campus environments. The project focused on improving outdoor seating areas while ensuring reliable protection from sun, wind, and rainfall.

Project overview

Leeds University required large, permanent commercial parasols to provide consistent shelter across three separate sites on its campus. The aim was to create practical outdoor spaces that could be used throughout the year, supporting study, social interaction, and community activity.

The proposal specified the supply and installation of ten 5m x 5m parasols, featuring branded valances and UV treated, heat reflective canopies. Each structure was designed to perform in challenging weather conditions while maintaining a professional and visually consistent appearance.

Installation locations across campus

The project covered three key outdoor areas within the University campus.

The first installation was located outside the Roger Stevens Building, a central academic hub with high daily footfall. Three commercial grade parasols were installed to provide shelter for a large seating area used by students and visitors.

A second installation took place in a raised area overlooking the Cooling Pond, an important space for interdisciplinary research and teaching. Four large commercial parasols were positioned to create a protected seating environment while preserving views across the site.

The third location was situated outside the Student Union, where three parasols were installed to cover picnic benches and existing tiered seating. This area plays a key role in supporting student wellbeing and social engagement.

Product specification and performance

For this project, Indigo Shading proposed the use of A4 Extreme parasols, selected for their strength, durability, and suitability for high traffic environments.

These heavy duty commercial parasols feature reinforced arms, stable hinge points, and exceptionally strong masts, helping them withstand demanding weather conditions. Each parasol is wind tunnel tested and designed to deliver long term reliability.

The canopies were manufactured using heat reflective, UV treated fabrics to reduce sun exposure and improve comfort. Branded valances were incorporated to align with the University’s visual identity.

A connecting guttering system was also recommended, allowing rainwater to drain in a controlled direction and reducing water run off between structures.

Why Indigo Shading was selected

The University reviewed proposals from multiple suppliers before selecting Indigo Shading to deliver the project.

In addition to submitting a competitive tender, Indigo’s experience with large scale commercial parasol installations and previous high profile projects played an important role in the decision. The company’s recognised Altius accreditation also provided reassurance around quality standards and operational capability.

Trevor Ruddle, Managing Director of Indigo Shading Ltd, commented:

“We were delighted to be selected for this project. The selection process covered a variety of criteria, and we believe that our competitive tender, previous installations, and recognised accreditations were key factors in the final decision.”

Supporting outdoor learning and social spaces

Located close to Leeds city centre, the University supports a diverse community of more than 23,000 students and hosts a wide range of academic, cultural, and social activities.

By installing large, wind resistant commercial parasols across key outdoor areas, the project has helped create welcoming spaces that can be used in varying weather conditions. These sheltered environments support outdoor learning, informal study, and social interaction, helping to enhance the overall campus experience.

The installations also contribute to wider wellbeing objectives by encouraging greater use of outdoor spaces throughout the year.
